The staff and students at St. Anne school pride themselves on being an integral part of their school community. Recently, the school celebrated the first of its monthly School Spirit Days. The theme was to wear the school colours of blue and gold or any shirts where the school mascot appeared. Mrs. Lafrance’s Grade 3/4 class really got into the swing of things in what they wore, as well as participating in face painting to highlight school spirit from head to toe. Way to go St. Anne Angels!
St. Anne Staff “Pied” for School Challenge
Students at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School were issued a challenge. The school takes part every year in the Jump Rope for Heart Event but Vice Principal Laura Stirrett felt that this year, they could do more. Stirrett set a few fundraising goals for the students and asked them to try to outdo what they had done in the past. If they met these challenges, then certain staff members would have to take part in some interesting challenges of their own.
The goals set for the students were as follows:
Bronze challenge – if the students raised $1000, then Vice Principal Laura Stirrett and Custodian Daniel Sauve would have their hair spraypainted different colours for the day.
Silver challenge – if the students raised $1500, Vice Principal Laura Stirrett and Custodian Daniel Sauve would have pies thrown in their face as well as have their hair spraypainted.
Gold challenge – if the students raised $2000, then the the Vice Principal and Custodian would have their hair spraypainted, pies thrown in their face… and would be subjected to a silly string attack.
Platinum challenge – after these challenges went out, Vice Principal Laura Stirrett threw down the final gauntlet and said that if these challenges were not only met but surpassed and the school raised $3500, then the students could subject not only herself and the custodian, but St. Anne Principal Guy Mathieu as well!
Well, the students surpassed all fundraising challenges and managed to raise an amazing $6300 in just one week. To the delight of students and staff, top fundraising students took the opportunity to spraypaint hair, throw pies and spray silly string at the Principal, Vice Principal and Custodian without consequences. In the gym the students screamed with excitement as the three staff members could do nothing but sit and take the abuse. Congratulations to all of the students and staff at St. Anne for taking on such a great challenge with fantastic school spirit!
St. Anne Supports the Relief Efforts in Haiti
Recently, the students at St. Anne Catholic School held a Bake Sale in support of Haiti. It was a huge success! The funds were presented to Sister Therese Lamoureux, a missionary in Haiti and a survivor of the earthquake. Some students, like Emily in Grade 1, collected money on their own and presented it to Sister. Sister Therese was very moved and pleased with all the support from the parents and students at St. Anne. She was very thankful for all of their efforts and will present the money to her mission where it will be put to good use. Sister Therese had a wonderful time visiting the children at the Bake Sale and she extends her thanks to all the students and families for their generosity!
St. Anne Students Have Fun on the Ice
The students at St. Anne Catholic Elementary school laced up their skates recently for a field trip to Centennial Arena. Parents were invited to join their children as they skated around the ice enjoying themselves. There was fun for everyone!
St. Anne’s Parent Going Above and Beyond to Support School Community
At all of the schools at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, one can find many parents who go that extra mile to ensure that the students and staff have all that they need for great, fun, safe school days. One such parent that fits this bill is Todd Connors. Connors is a parent of a grade 8 student at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School in Hanmer and is the Regional Operations Manager of Perkins Restaurants. Todd is continuously supporting St. Anne not only with different supplies, but also by finding time to fit volunteering at the school in his busy schedule. As Regional Operations Manger of Perkins, he often donates many different food supplies to the school including pancake mix, muffin mix, crackers, soups, juice etc and in large enough quantities to feed the entire school! As well, he has donated season tickets to the Sudbury Wolves games for the school to enhance their student recognition programs such as “I caught you doing something good”. Laura Stirrett, Vice Principal of the school feels that Connors is an excellent example of positive parent involvement as well as a great example of how community can work together with schools building strong partnerships. “Mr. Connors is an important part of our school.” said Stirrett. “With his generous donations, he has helped eased some of the fund-raising burdens on students especially during these difficult financial times. We are very grateful for all that Mr. Connors has done and does for our school!” Cheryl Macrury, the JK/SK teacher at the school had her students write a letter to Mr. Connors on behalf of the school to express their gratitude for all that he has done for them. St. Anne’s would like to thank Mr. Connors and Perkins Restaurant for really making a difference in their school community.

St. Anne Catholic Elementary Students Celebrate the 2010 Olympics
The English and French Immersion Junior and Senior Kindergarten children of St. Anne’s Catholic Elementary School celebrated the opening of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics holding their own torch ceremony within the school. Ava DeVos and Owen Moxam led their classmates with the relay through the St. Anne hallways.
St. Anne Catholic School Brings 21st Century Technology into Classroom
St. Anne Catholic School in Hanmer has entered into a unique partnership with Science North by piloting an in-class videoconference session. Students from Mr. Thomson’s Grade 6 class utilized Macbook laptop computers and the newly installed Smartboard technology in the classroom to conduct a videoconference with Bruce Doran, a Bluecoat and Staff Scientist from Science North.
The program Science North is presenting is entitled Predators and their Prey. The program is suitable for grades 4 to 6 but has specific curriculum links in grades 4 and 6.
The videoconference lasted approximately 50 minutes in length and allowed staff scientists to dialogue with the students through a question and answer session. St. Anne students examined various biological samples such as skulls, claws, and teeth to learn some of the animals’ physical and behavioural features that allow them to obtain food and survive in their habitat. The material included in the Science North kit contained animal skulls, skeletons, and animal tracks which had been delivered to the school in advance.
This videoconference provided the students with not only a “one of a kind hands on learning experience” but also demonstrated how the use of technology can foster creative and unique partnerships in the Sudbury community.
St. Anne Catholic School Enters into Unique Videoconferencing Partnership with Science North
St. Anne Catholic School has entered into a unique partnership with Science North in piloting an in-class videoconference session. Mr. Thomson’s grade 6 class will participate in piloting the Science North video conferencing school program “Predators and Prey” on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 12:35-1:55 p.m.
Grade 6 students will utilize newly installed Smartboard technology in the classroom to conduct a videoconference with a Bluecoat from Science North. The program Science North is presenting is Predators and their Prey. It is a program suitable for grades 4 to 6 but has specific curriculum links in grades 4 and 6. The videoconference will be approximately 50 minutes in duration. The program includes a Science North science kit containing animal skulls, skeletons, tracks, etc.
This videoconference provides the students with not only a “one of a kind hands on learning experience” but also demonstrates how the use of technology can foster creative and unique partnerships in the Sudbury community
St. Anne Catholic School to Host “Christmas Technology Night”
St. Anne Catholic School, 4500 St. Michel Street in Hanmer will be hosting its “Christmas Technology Night” on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The evening will kickoff with a free dinner sponsored by Perkins Restaurant for the parents and students of Grade 6, 7 and 8 from both St. Anne and Immaculate Conception Catholic Schools.
Following the dinner there will presentations of amazing student work that has been completed on the laptops followed by a MacBook scavenger and a short talent show in the library.
All of the families joining in on the fun for the evening will leave with a cd created by the Grade 7 and 8 classes at St. Anne Catholic School featuring the favorite recipes of the students.
The night will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and will conclude at 8:00 p.m.
St. Anne Catholic School Hosts Magical Math Night
St. Anne Catholic School invited children and parents to take part in a Family Math Night at the school recently. Students and their families moved to three separate math centres throughout the evening including the one above where teachers Ms. Shonwise (left) and Mme. Lafrance and the children created a graph showing who has a stuffed bear.
Families left with a take home bag of activities that they can work on together. The evening ended with a performance by Archie the Magician, who entertained children while the parents debriefed with the teachers.
