The students at St. Anne Catholic Elementary school laced up their skates recently for a field trip to Centennial Arena. Parents were invited to join their children as they skated around the ice enjoying themselves. There was fun for everyone!
St. Anne’s Parent Going Above and Beyond to Support School Community
At all of the schools at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, one can find many parents who go that extra mile to ensure that the students and staff have all that they need for great, fun, safe school days. One such parent that fits this bill is Todd Connors. Connors is a parent of a grade 8 student at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School in Hanmer and is the Regional Operations Manager of Perkins Restaurants. Todd is continuously supporting St. Anne not only with different supplies, but also by finding time to fit volunteering at the school in his busy schedule. As Regional Operations Manger of Perkins, he often donates many different food supplies to the school including pancake mix, muffin mix, crackers, soups, juice etc and in large enough quantities to feed the entire school! As well, he has donated season tickets to the Sudbury Wolves games for the school to enhance their student recognition programs such as “I caught you doing something good”. Laura Stirrett, Vice Principal of the school feels that Connors is an excellent example of positive parent involvement as well as a great example of how community can work together with schools building strong partnerships. “Mr. Connors is an important part of our school.” said Stirrett. “With his generous donations, he has helped eased some of the fund-raising burdens on students especially during these difficult financial times. We are very grateful for all that Mr. Connors has done and does for our school!” Cheryl Macrury, the JK/SK teacher at the school had her students write a letter to Mr. Connors on behalf of the school to express their gratitude for all that he has done for them. St. Anne’s would like to thank Mr. Connors and Perkins Restaurant for really making a difference in their school community.

A Diamond in the Rough; St. Anne Catholic Schools Re-Greening Efforts Transform School Yard
St. Anne Catholic School was runner up in the VETAC Ugliest School Yard Competition last spring. The school received a cash prize from Xstrata Nickel to help in its re-greening efforts. The funds were used to purchase sod for the playground, benches, trees, and materials for two large brick agricultural beds in which students from Mrs. Wuksinic’s Grade 2/3 class Ms. MacRury’s JK/SK class planted flowers.
St. Anne Catholic School would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the many families, staff and students who helped make this amazing idea a reality. Thank you also to the local businesses who donated items and/or services. St. Anne Catholic School would also like to recognize and thank Jamie Beauchamp from Xstrata Nickel along with representatives from the business community including Peter Vanderkooy from Botanix Azilda Green Houses and Myrna Bechamp from Ashley’s Landscape Supplies who visited St. Anne Catholic School to view the “final product” and to wish the students well.

St. Anne Catholic School Presents Twist and Shout”
St. Anne Catholic School, 4500 St. Michel in Hanmer is proud to present its year end musical production “Twist and Shout” starting Wednesday, June 6 until Friday, June 8, 2007. More than 35 talented singers, actors and dancers will be featured in this 1960’s style rock and roll show, which also features a special appearance by the king of rock and roll himself, Elvis Presley.
The story is about a young teenage songwriter, Rhonda Cascade, who tries to get her song published by a scrupulous producer who in turn, steals the song for himself. Along the way Rhonda enlists the help of Sam Sunday, a bumbling police detective, to help her in her quest to get her song back.
The price of admission is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for seniors and students. Show times are at 7:00 p.m. each evening in the gymnasium. Tickets can be purchased at the door each evening. All money raised will help support the Arts program at St. Anne Catholic School.
St. Anne Catholic School Students Celebrate Seniors Month at Westmount Retirement Residence
St. Anne Catholic School’s Canadian Idol
Olympic Speed Skater, Kristina Groves visited St. Anne Catholic School in Hanmer on Friday to chat with students and to put faces to the names that she has been corresponding with over the last several months. The two-time Silver Medalist (1500 metre and Team Pursuit) has been pen pals with the Grade One and Two classes at St. Anne since the fall of this year. Kristina has been corresponding with the students on a regular basis teaching them about her exciting sport, and her training.
From the onset of her arrival at the Sudbury Airport at 8:25 a.m. last Friday, Kristina spent the entire day with the St. Anne Catholic School students. Her itinerary included an introduction to the school community followed by skating at the Tom Davies arena in Lively and meeting with the entire student body in the late afternoon before returning to her hometown of Ottawa.
When asked by a Grade Two student why she decided to take up speed skating, Katrina replied that, “It was Gaeten Boucher, a Canadian Olympic speed skater in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary that first inspired me to become a speed skater. From the minute I saw him skate I knew that I wanted to do what he had done . . . I wanted to fly on ice . . . my dream was to compete in the Olympics for Canada some day and bring back a medal. So although I was only eleven years old, I went home and told my mom that I wanted to take up speed skating . . . eighteen years later at the age of 29, I was lucky enough to be presented with not one but two silver medals in Turin. Never give up on your dream,” stated Groves to a captivated audience. “With enough passion, dedication and commitment, dreams can come true.”
Groves’ presentation to the students included a slide show of her stay and competition at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, as well as an overview of the equipment, and training required in order to become a speed skater, followed by a question and answer period.
Canadian Olympian Enjoys Pen Pal Friendship with St. Anne Students
Olympic athlete Kristina Groves has given the Grade One and Two class at St. Anne School a reason to cheer a little louder for Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Kristina Groves is a Speed Skater with whom the children have been Pen Pals since the fall.
“Along with speed skating, she has been teaching us about the importance of always trying your best, eating properly and taking care of your body. It is so nice of her to take time away from such a busy schedule and make them feel a bit more special”.
To make sure that Kristina was not lonely on Valentine’s Day, the children made her cards and pictures. They also sent her a good luck bracelet and a banner that they made to cheer her on. The students were thrilled to hear that she had qualified for the 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and the Team Pursuit.
They created posters to be posted around the school and flags to cheer with while watching her at school. During the Olympics the students will be giving a morning news report to update everyone on Canada’s medal standings.

St. Anne Food Drive, A Huge Success!
Congratulations to St. Anne Catholic School on their extremely successful food drive before the holidays. The drive was spearheaded by Grade 5 teacher, Mr. Michael Cayen, and saw over 7,000 food items collected. All items were donated to the Knights of Columbus in Hanmer
Mr. David Martin’s class not only met, but surpassed his challenge. As a result, Mr. Martin agreed to shave his head. Grade 7 and 8 students looked on eagerly and actively participated in the head shaving. Hanmer families will benefit from the generous spirit of students, their families and others who have donated time, food and money to the St. Anne Catholic School Food Drive.
