Sudbury Catholic Schools Help Make Winters a Little Warmer!

The Student Senate at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board has helped make winter a little warmer for our community! Throughout the month of October, the Student Senate spearheaded a campaign to collect gently used winter coats in all sizes. The Senate, which is comprised of 15 secondary students, also encouraged other schools to participate in this initiative.

Together, Sudbury Catholic Schools collected 436 coats and winter accessories, surpassing last year’s number of 200 coats and winter accessories. Working with Derek Cashmore of Cooper Equipment Rentals, the coats will be donated to those in need throughout the Greater Sudbury community.

“The Student Senate are seen as leaders and innovators not only in their schools but across the Sudbury Catholic District School Board,” said Amanda Barry, Teacher Facilitator of the Student Senate. “They are truly difference makers and I am honoured to work alongside them year after year.”

“It was amazing to see our schools all come together and support such a wonderful cause,” said Ryan Scarpellini, Student Trustee and member of the Student Senate. “We are excited to continue to grow the campaign year after year and continue to make a difference in our community.”

St. Anne Students Honoured By Royal Canadian Legion

The Royal Canadian Legion was at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School to celebrate the many winners of the Remembrance Day Poster and Essay Contest. Tyler Rideout, Grade 8 Student won the Gold Medal for his Remembrance Day Essay.  The school community came together to congratulate Tyler and had the pleasure of hearing Tyler’s very moving essay first hand.  Tyler’s essay has now been submitted Provincially. 

Sudbury Catholic Elementary Band takes silver, gold at the Northern Ontario Music Festival

It’s Festival season, and the Sudbury Catholic Elementary Band did not disappoint! This band is made up of 125 students from 6 schools – St. Charles College, St. Benedict, St. Anne, St. Charles Chelmsford, St. John and St. James – and is directed by Leanne Urso, JoAnne Comisso, Sabrina Clark and Eric Miron.

The students competed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival on Tuesday, March 21st at Sudbury Secondary School and came away with a Silver award. Then, on Tuesday, April 4th, the band competed at the Kiwanis Music Festival at St. Benedict School and improved on their score by winning a Gold award! Congratulations goes out to all the band members for all their hard work.

St. Anne Catholic School Raises $17K for Cancer

On Friday, May 6, 2016, staff and students at St. Anne Catholic School reached what at first seemed like an impossible goal: they raised over $17,043.83 for cancer! A ‘Relay for Life’ campaign to raise funds for the disease was launched at the school for the third consecutive year. The initial goal set by the staff and students was to raise $1.00 more than last year’s total of $13,870.00. Little did anyone know at the time that the students at the Catholic School in Hanmer would surpass all expectations!

The campaign, organized by Lillian Novosel, a teacher at the school, came to an exciting conclusion at the end of Catholic Education Week. Since the students were able to reach their fundraising goal, they will be rewarded with a number of special activities in recognition of their efforts. Mr. Mathieu, Principal at the school, commented that “the staff and students did an amazing job in coming together for a cause that touches everyone. Once again, we are reminded of how special the St. Anne Catholic School community truly is.”

Relay for Life is an event that helps build community spirit by bringing students and staff together for cancer, a cause that affects everyone. It is a great event for people of all ages, interests, and ability levels. Relay for Life provides a leadership opportunity to students who can help plan and participate in the event. This student-led initiative teaches us all about the value of charitable causes and volunteer involvement. Way to go Angels!

St. Anne students pay tribute to fallen soldier

At 9:00am this morning, 135 students in grade 7 and 8 at St. Anne Catholic School in Hanmer came together to “Stand on Guard”. Students sang O Canada together to pay tribute to the fallen Canadian soldier, Nathan Cirillo.

The staff and students at St. Anne Catholic School also participated in a prayer of peace led by their principal Mr. Guy Mathieu. The students at St. Anne Catholic School recognize the importance of coming together as a community, and will continue to “Stand on Guard” during this difficult time in Canadian History.

St. Anne Students Use Technology To “Envision” More Than Sugarplums

Christmas is a time for sharing and giving. That was very evident when Mrs. Belanger’s Grade 7 English students at St. Anne school in Hanmer shared their laptops and their time with the Grade 3 English students in Mme. Lafrance’s class. In keeping with the holiday spirit, the Grade 7 students within the Sudbury Catholic Board helped their new friends in Grade 3 type out their letter to Santa Claus. The younger children were excited about their thoughts of what they should ask for. The Grade 7 students were not only able to assist in the typing out of the wishes of the Grade 3 children, but while both groups were typing, the Intermediate students were also showing the primary students some of the skills that were needed to use the laptops. Both groups of students really enjoyed working together. Jaida Sabzali worked with her older brother Hunter on her letter. She said, “It was fun to work with my big brother. It was fun using Hunter’s computer and I learned a lot.” Hunter was quoted as saying, “It was fun to help out my little sister. I helped her type out her letter to Santa and I was impressed to watch her type.” The Grade 3 students will be mailing their printed letters to Santa Claus. They will anxiously be awaiting for their return letters from the North Pole.

St. Anne Student Finds Contest Has “Sweet” Benefits

Patrick Corbin, a Gr. 4 French Immersion student at St. Anne School in Hanmer, started his school year off joined by hundreds of other students within the school in a chocolate bar fund raising contest. Little did he know that when the fund raiser was over, he and his classmates within Mme Pickard’s Grade 3/4 French Immersion room would be the top selling class within the school. The Sudbury Catholic School students won a pizza and movie afternoon for their efforts. In addition, one student was to be chosen to take over the job of Principal Mr. Guy Mathieu for the day. That student was Patrick. Besides helping his class to win, Patrick was the student who actually sold the most chocolate bars in the entire fundraising campaign and as such, was voted by his classmates to change roles from student to principal.

Dressed in a white shirt and tie, Patrick, or Mr. Corbin as he preferred to be addressed, performed many tasks throughout the day. He walked throughout the school meeting with many children from within the student body. He became very popular with the entire student population when he extended the afternoon recess by an extra five minutes and declared a “no homework day”. When asked if all of his hard work selling the chocolate bars was worth the outcome, Mr. Corbin was quoted as saying,” I had a lot of organizing to do with the new balls for the gym and preparing paper work to ready for the announcements.” St. Anne School vice-principal, Joanne Commisso, said “It was a pleasure working with the new principal for the day,” and thanked him for his efforts. A taste of being charge has Patrick geared up for next fall when the school fund raising contest comes around again. The staff and students at St. Anne School are very proud of your efforts Patrick. Way to go Angel!
